About Us
Mission Statement
The mission of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is to inspire people to grow by:
- developing and nurturing partnerships between plants and people of all ages,
- fostering an appreciation and enjoyment of nature and the environment,
- promoting wellness of body, mind and spirit through association with plants,
- modeling sustainable behavior and practices.
Master Plan
The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden will have 18 thematically distinct gardens, 5 diverse woodland experiences, a visitor’s center, an amphitheater for outdoor concerts and performances, a celebration center to accommodate large outdoor or indoor weddings and events, and a center for botanic research.

A master plan for the project was completed in 2002 by the nationally known Pittsburgh landscape architectural firm, Marshall, Tyler, and Rausch (MTR).
We are proud to be creating a Botanic Garden that will:
- Attract millions of visitors and become an economic engine for the region.
- Serve as a national Gold Standard in reclamation.
- Instill respect for the land and all it supports in future generations.
The Garden will feature native plants and plants from all the temperate climates of the world. One will be able to experience the cycle of life with Western Pennsylvania’s spectacular seasonal changes. The Garden will offer both woodland walks and trails for brisk exercise, as well as serene settings inviting one to linger, enjoy the solitude, and renew the spirit.
An important mission of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is to teach our children to appreciate the beauty of our environment and steward it for future generations. We will offer outdoor hands-on experiences to inspire and educate both children and adults. A partnership with Family Communications has opened the way for a Fred Rogers early childhood garden. This will be the first children’s garden of its kind.
Non-profit Status
